Description:

Long before roads and trunk highways, branchlines connected more than five hundred miles of railway mainline to remote coastal communities across the island portion of Canada’s tenth province. These lines were often the only means of delivering goods and services to outport Newfoundland.

With Kenneth Pieroway as your guide, step back into the post-Confederation years of rail travel in Newfoundland. This first-time-in-print, all-colour journey showcases CN and industrial branchlines that operated until 1988, featuring previously unpublished photographs by some of North America’s finest railway photographers and passionate railfans. More than a history lesson, the images pay tribute to the locomotives and rolling stock that shaped the province’s railway story—you might just hear the mournful call of a whistle echoing across trestles and narrow-gauge tracks.
